Q
What do you have to offer?
A
The Digital Duck offers educational discounted prices on Apple hardware and software to current University of Oregon students, faculty and staff. If you would like to purchase hardware, there may be eligibility requirements and financing options available.
Q
Who is eligible to buy from the Digital Duck?
A
Currently enrolled or admitted students as well as current University of Oregon staff and faculty are eligible to purchase from the Digital Duck. K-12 teachers are not eligible to purchase Apple products but we encourage you to shop from our wide selection of academically-priced software. If you are not sure whether you qualify, please call 346-4331 Ext. 502.
Q
Do you have financing available?
A
There is no financing available directly through the Digital Duck, but other options exist. Apple offers the AppleLoan Program which allows you to defer principal payments until you graduate. The loan process can be done in our department with the help of our sales staff or on your own at www.apple.com/appleloan. Note, you may receive a better interest rate using Apple's system in the Digital Duck. It is also a good idea to check with your credit union or bank about a computer loan so that you can choose the loan that works best for you. If your department requires you to purchase a computer and you are receiving financial aid, you may be able to apply your financial aid towards the purchase of your computer. Visit the Office of Financial Aid in Room 264 of Oregon Hall for more information about this.
Q
How do I place an order?
A

A
In some cases, you will receive a full refund upon cancellation. We reserve the right to charge a 20% cancellation fee for items we cannot return or items that we special ordered. For more information concerning our return policy, come in and we will be happy to answer your questions.
Q
What about items not currently in your store?
A
We can special order many software, hardware, and accessories that we are not able stock on our shelves. Software generally takes two weeks to get depending on whether or not it is in stock at our distributors. For other items, such as Hewlett Packard and Apple, it is best to ask us, due to wide variations in delivery. Delivery dates are estimates based on information provided by our vendors.
Q
I need to run Microsoft Windows on my Macintosh, what should I do?
A
Before buying a product that will allow you to run Windows on your Macintosh, determine whether you really need to. First, find out whether the software that you need is offered for the Macintosh. If the answer is yes, your problem is usually solved. Software that has been written for both Windows and the Macintosh will often allow you to both save as well as open files created for the other platform. If your office uses Microsoft Word for the PC but you have Word for the Macintosh at home, you can save your files on a USB flash drive, CDR/W, then open, then open, edit, and print them at home. For other possibilities such as Windows emulation software, please come in to the The Digital Duck or call (541) 346-4331 Ext. 502. We will help you choose the best option for your needs.
Q
What is RAM and why do I need it for my computer?
A
RAM stands for Random Access Memory. When you open a program, your computer puts a copy of that program into RAM. RAM is temporary storage; a hard drive is permanent storage. RAM is usually measured in megabytes (MB), which is the same unit of measurement used for hard drives. You need RAM in your computer so that the operating system and programs have a place to go when you start using them. If you are running low on memory (RAM), the computer will usually tell you when you are trying to run a program. You can upgrade the amount of RAM on nearly every personal computer made.
Q
How much will it cost to add memory (RAM) to my computer?
A
For RAM prices and installation costs, please call The Digital Duck at (541) 346-4331 Ext. 502 or stop by the store.
Q
What is the difference between the iMac and other Macintosh computers?
A
In most cases, the only difference between an iMac and other Macintosh computers is the way that the system is packaged. iMac computers include bundled software that is pre-installed on the hard drive, while Power Macintosh computers come with only the system software. The iMac has an integrated monitor and cpu.
Q
Will my computer be obsolete in 3 months?
A
Typically, the real question here isn't whether your computer will be obsolete in 3 months, but will there be something faster and cheaper by that time. There will always be new models that do more and cost less than the computer you just bought. This does not mean that your computer is no longer of any use. As long as your computer can do what you need it to do for you, it is not obsolete. For this reason, it is important to consider not only your present but your future computing needs. This will ensure a productive computer for years to come.
Q
How much will it cost to upgrade my software?
A
We generally do not sell upgrades due to the already low prices available to educational users. In most cases, the cost to upgrade a program is more than the cost to buy a new copy at an educational discount. It is always a good idea to contact the company who makes the program to inquire about the cost to upgrade to ensure you are getting the best price. More information on software prices is available.
Q
What do I need to get onto the Internet?
A
If you are going to access the Internet from home, you will need a modem unless you opt to pay for a broadband service. Once you have your modem you will need to configure your computer to connect to the University's network. For further instruction pick up your free DuckWare CD from the Computing Center in McKenzie Hall.
Q
Do your salespeople work on commission?
A
No. Our sales consultants are here to help you find a solution that fits your needs.
