The Literary Duck accepts course material requests from faculty through our convenient online adoption method. We send out a packet with reminder dates each quarter to every department for distribution to the faculty, approximately 4 weeks before the due date for course material requests. This packet will include a letter with the dates as well as copies of our simple guide to submitting requests on line. In addition, we send out several notices throughout the preceding quarter listing courses with no books/materials requested for them. It is important to review these notices since there can be many reasons why we do not have specific course material information. PLEASE NOTE: All course materials adoption requests must be in writing; we cannot accept them over the phone. If you're having trouble with our online adoption system, please feel free to contact Alysen, Gina or Bruce at (541) 346-4331 and we will be happy to help you place your adoption request.

The Literary Duck is not involved in the production of the packets and does not determine the quantity that is printed. In order to help students save the most money, packets sold at the Literary Duck are provided to students at very close to cost. All course packet requests must be done through the Copyright Clearance Office located at Broadway and High Streets. To contact the Copyright Clearance Office, call (541) 346-5370. The Literary Duck receives the finished packets from Campus Copy and sells them with the course books for classes. If you are planning to use a course packet for your class, it is helpful to indicate this with your adoption request so we can be sure to reserve shelf space for it. Please consider the overall cost of your course packet when submitting your book list.

The Literary Duck offers a Guaranteed Reading Materials Program which involves making photocopies of readings for books that sell out due to over-enrollment or excess demand. Books eligible for this program are ordered on, or prior to, the pre-determined due date for each term (see dates below). This date would also apply to readopted books that have been used during the current academic term. For all other orders, we need about four weeks before the start of the term to obtain new materials from the publishers and have them available in time for classes. However, it is highly recommended that you place your order with plenty of time in case any issues with out-of-stocks, shorts, or shipping happen to arise.

We are one of only 25 national large college campus stores to offer our members (UO students, faculty & staff) a 10% discount off the publisher list price of new books and a 32% discount off the publisher list price of used books. This rebate amounts to over $1,000,000 each academic year.

Our adoption deadlines help secure the largest possible inventory of used books for students, saving them valuable dollars each term. When we receive adoption orders by the deadline, this allows us to give our students the highest dollar value during buyback. It also gives us enough time to obtain more used books through our channel of bookstore campuses nationwide.

Our staff proactively contacts faculty who order bundled texts to discuss alternate ordering options. Bundled books cost students more money than any other type of book order. Only new course books are included in bundles packaged by publishers so we can't offer used books. Furthermore, bundled books are NOT eligible for Buyback. Selling all pieces separately can really save students a great deal! By partnering with our faculty, we can save students the most money possible.

Our buyback online tools allow students to look up the current buyback value of their text book, review current value for past purchases made with the Duck Store and sign up for free buyback alerts. Book prices change during the term; a book with low value now may have higher value at a later date if it is used here or on a different university campus. This service is a great way to stay up to date on the current price of your book!

While access to online study aids, interactive websites and ancillary CD-Roms may add value to the overall learning experience for a student, they also add dollars to the original text. Bundling books creates a need for new textbooks so the Campus Duck Store is unable to offer used books in order to save students money.

If you plan on only using a few chapters or only pieces of a course book, consider the benefits of using packets or Blackboard as an alternative to the entire text. This will save money and lower the overall cost for students.

By lengthening the span of time you use a specific course book edition, you increase the percentage of used books we can purchase. The more used books we can supply for students, more students will benefit from the savings! It will also increase the value of that particular text in the Buyback market from students at the end of each term.

The procedure for course book ordering is one requiring literally hundreds of hours of data entry, research, follow-up, and physical processing. As well, there are a variety of things that can happen to cause problems with getting the course books here to the store. The sooner the request is submitted, the better chance we have to rectify any problems that arise before classes begin. Another important reason relates to buyback. We set the order deadlines to allow us enough time to process book orders and determine what we will need to buy back for the upcoming term. This allows us to have used books right away, and students have a chance to get some of their money back at the end of the term.

The order process takes a great deal of time. There are many, many steps to go through before a book is actually ordered from a publisher. It would be terribly inefficient, both time-wise and financially, to place separate orders for each faculty order as they are submitted. We batch the orders and circulate the batches through the used book market, separating out the titles for which we know no used books will be available. This process takes at least a week or two for each batch since we rework the lists multiple time to aggressively try for used copies. Once the used book markets have been exhausted, we then order from the publishers/distributors. These orders are placed both electronically and by phone. This is also when any problems typically arise requiring anywhere from several minutes to several weeks of research and follow-up to try and resolve them. Publishers buy, sell and change titles, go out of business, change location, and merge with one another all the time, and sometimes it is quite difficult to find the answers we need to expedite an order. The other issue that creates a "window" between the submission of a faculty request and the actual placement of the order is that we try to get as many copies of a title as we can from buyback. This is very important to the students we serve and we try to recycle books back into the store as often as possible. When we don't get as many back as we hoped, we must then order the quantities we are short to fill the enrollment. TIP: To help speed up the process, you may submit requests a little at a time if you are unsure of all the books you wish to use for your course by the deadline.

1. Navigate to the Online Course Material resources section of our website. You can access this by using the Shop > Literary Duck drop down option from the top navigation or by visiting literaryduck.uoduckstore.com .
2. Go to the Faculty Resources tab and click on the Adopt Course Materials link in the left hand navigation.
3. Select the type of books you'd like to adopt and follow the Helpful Hints to place your adoption.

To find out if your books are in stock at the Campus Duck Store, please call our Information Kiosk (541) 346-4331 and speak with a Literary Duck staff member, who can tell you if the books are in stock.

Course packets are produced in joint effort by the copyright clearance office and Campus Copy. The material to be reproduced must first be cleared by Copyright Clearance. They create the master copy that is used for reproduction at Campus Copy. Campus Copy then delivers the packets to us to sell. We are not responsible for quality, format or quantity of the packets. When packets sell out, we place individual orders for students (called "rainchecks") to Campus Copy, and they print for us what is needed on a daily basis. If you know your enrollment is going to be much larger than the print run, you should notify the Copyright Clearance office. Also, it is helpful if you let the Literary Duck know if you plan to use a course packet so we can be sure to reserve shelf space for it.

Yes! While we can monitor enrollments using information available on Duck Hunt, it is important that we be notified about enrollment increases as soon as possible so that we may order accordingly.

Yes! Sometimes we are able to cancel book orders if we know if will not be needed after all. And, we pull the cancelled books from the shelf so students do not end up buying them unnecessarily and have to hassle with a return. It also helps us determine sales history when making buying decisions for future courses. If we know a book has been cancelled, it will explain why it did not sell!

The only way to obtain desk copies and/or teaching aids is through a publisher representative or the publisher directly. Please refer to the list of Area Publisher Representatives , or the Faculty Center Network for detailed contact information. Most publishers' websites contain information about ordering instructor materials.

The Faculty Center Network is an excellent tool for finding out what schools are using which texts. FCN categorizes by subject and type of school.

Absolutely! We accept book requests as far in advance as you are realistically able to order. For example, we currently have many faculty that teach the same class each term, using the same books, so they submit a "standing" request for the whole year. This would also work for continuation classes, or even classes that are taught once a year but consistently use the same material.

Yes, because all continuation classes do not necessarily use the exact same material each term. Also, instructors change and need to be updated. Please see the Q & A above for more information about "standing requests."

Since 1920, the Duck Store has been owned collectively by the students, faculty and classified staff of the University of Oregon. That's right! We aren't owned by the University; YOU are an owner of the Duck Store. We're here to work for you. In 2003, the Duck Store Board of Directors, comprised of eight students, two faculty and one classified staff member, made the decision to award 25 students their required course books or art/architecture supplies for free (up to $400).

During the first few days of each term, the Duck Store selects 25 students at random times and at randomly selected cash registers. There is a flurry of noise and celebration when each award winner is selected. Once selected, the person is asked to provide a current class list so we can pay for required course books, or syllabus with a list of required art/architecture supplies. If the person has already purchased some of his/her required books or supplies the Duck Store will reimburse them.

The Board wants all students to know the Duck Store realizes going to school in general and buying couse books in particular is expensive. While only twenty-five students will receive these awards, the Board wants students to know their Duck Store is working hard to keep prices as low as possible. The Duck Store tries to get as many used books as possible and is one of but a few college bookstores that discounts its prices from the publisher's list price. Last year, the book discount amounted to over $1,000,000 in savings to students.

Alexander Mathäs is Professor of German at the University of Oregon and author of Narcissism and Paranoia in the Age of Goethe and Der Kalte Krieg in der deutschen Literaturkritik: Der Fall Martin Walser. His teaching and research address questions about the self, subjectivity, and artistic creativity in 18th-20th century German literature and thought. He has published articles on concepts of identity, gender, and memory in the works of eighteenth and twentieth-century authors. His current work examines the ways in which eighteenth-century writers engaged with scientific and philosophical ideas about the human body, mind, and soul. It explores how the eighteenth-century literary imagination intersected with anthropological and psychological concepts and continues to inform current ideas of what it means to be human.

While there are countless philosophical and psychological studies that focus on sources of the self, narcissism has found relatively little attention in a pre-Freudian context. The Self as Muse fills this gap by examining various aspects of narcissism and their significance for the outpouring of creativity in late eighteenth and nineteenth-century German literature. In many Eighteenth-century works of the period narcissism refers to the creation of an idealized image of the self and the desire to merge with this image. It provided an impetus for poetic production as writers resorted to the Greek myth of Narcissus to express what they perceived as the inner workings of their soul. Yet they were also acutely aware of the vain, and therefore narcissistic, motivations for their explorations of the self. While those influenced by the Pietist tradition attempted to distinguish between an "unselfish" self-scrutiny and self-indulging vanity, others like Goethe took advantage of narcissism's creative potential and integrated it into their aesthetic endeavors. The abundance of confessional and autobiographical accounts, the burgeoning of poetry drawing on personal experience, the emergence of a type of drama that is based on empathy, and the concern with an individual's ability to control one's senses and emotions in general testify to an unprecedented interest in notions of the self in German literature. Mathas explains the emergence of narcissism in the literature of the period as a sense-inspired concept that aims to bring about a better comprehension of both the self and other human beings, and how writers used narcissism to improve the moral behavior of their readers. It examines eighteenth-century representations of narcissism against the background of Freudian and post-Freudian notions of the concept, and explores narcissism as a creative process that engages both reader and writer in the production of meaning.
