In August of 2013 in a two-car garage, the first products of what would become Timeless Etchings Co. were made, crafted from the coveted French and American red stained wine barrels.
The French oak barrels carry an old and interesting story. The wood that form the barrels come from Forest of Tronçais in France. It was Jean Baptist Colbert, Louis XIV’s finance minister, who had the forest planted in the 1600s. Today, the forest is meticulously controlled by the Office National des Forêts. Twice a year felled trees are auctioned (prices sometimes reaching $20,000 for an “unblemished” tree), the bidders often using the prized timber for furniture or wine staves.
Any given wine barrel can be used up to about five years, and then the wood is again resold. This is when companies like Timeless Etchings Co. get their hands on them, extending the life of the lumber, and producing one of a kind clocks, coasters, signs, bottle opener, and barrel displays.
Each piece is unique and carries a 200-year-old history and bares the trademarks of your favorite school: The University of Oregon.
