“I have always loved drawing. My mom is an artist, so I was always encouraged to make art.”

Marianne Walker grew up in an artistic environment. “My mom is an artist, so I was always encouraged to make art.” Marianne started freelancing in high school illustrating for children’s safety books and went on to get a degree in Multimedia Design at the University of Oregon. Today, she works at Imagination International importing Copic products and teaches workshops at the Eugene Library and Springfield Library, and Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.

Using primarily Copic pens, markers, and airbrush system, Marianne draws nature as well as Asian Motifs drawing inspiration from Hieronymus Bosch and James C. Christensen.

Copic markers are used by both professionals and amateurs alike. You can find a wide array of Copic Sketch and Original markers in our art department or online.

Words of Wisdom from Marianne:

Draw a wide variety of things, styles and constantly challenge yourself. The more you look around to find inspiration, the better your work will be. Never stop learning as you draw. If you get in a rut, then force yourself to learn a new medium, draw something you’ve never drawn before or mimic a style that is totally foreign to you. Your work will stand out as you incorporate more variety and uniqueness into your pieces.

If you need to work to survive, choose work that compliments your art (design or creative jobs, or in a creative inspiring space). Don’t settle for something just because you need money, you’ll only be upset. If you are wholly focused on becoming the best at what you love, then opportunities will come.

You’ll be scared, but push yourself. Have confidence in your mistakes, ask for critiques, and thrive on criticism or else your work won’t progress. Share your work, and learn from what comes back, even if you don’t agree. Volunteer for great art places around town to find the opportunities. Teaching and volunteering will bring you much inspiration and help you to keep going, even if you feel creatively blocked.
